Request a Tool Steel Quote From the Mill

Four kinds of message arrive at this desk: a tool steel quote request on a grade and a section, a document list from a quality department, a works visit booking, and a question about a batch already delivered. Each goes to a different person inside the works and comes back in a different format.

Tool Steel Quote Request Checklist

Seven lines make a tool steel quote request answerable on the first reply. Each one settles a decision that otherwise comes back to you as a question and costs a day.

  • Round bar Ø 16–600 mm
  • Flat bar and plate 20–500 mm thick
  • Width 200–1,200 mm
  • Fourteen grades
  • 100% UT to SEP 1921 Class D/d or E/e

Grade

In whichever standard your customer wrote it: AISI, DIN or W-Nr, JIS, GB, ASSAB or BÖHLER. That maps your designation onto one of the fourteen grades made here, and with it the process regime, the annealing curve and the hardness window. Every grade is electroslag remelted and run through the EFS fine structure regime across the hot work, cold work and plastic mould families, so the mapping decides more than a name.

Section and Length

Round bar runs 16 to 600 mm. Flat bar and plate run 20 to 500 mm thick by 200 to 1,200 mm wide. The section decides which of the three forging lines produces the piece, and whether it sits at the end of the range where the production programme is checked before any date is given.

Quantity Per Size, Per Grade

A mixed list usually splits between stock and production, and it can only be split line by line.

Delivery Condition

Annealed and pre-hardened are two different products, and pre-hardened applies only to 1.2085 and 420. A line that does not say which one gets a question rather than an assumption.

Surface

Black forged and descaled, turned, ground, or milled on six faces. That decides how much allowance is left on for the hardening, EDM work or grinding your customer runs afterwards.

Ultrasonic Acceptance Class

Testing is 100% ultrasonic to SEP 1921, and the class your order names, Class D/d or Class E/e, is the class the bar is judged against and the class printed on the certificate. If your customer has not specified one, say so and the desk asks what the tool is.

An Attachment

A drawing, or your replenishment list as a spreadsheet. Both are read before anything is priced.

A short list beats a long message.

Seven lines and an attachment are enough to price a mixed replenishment list. Anything missing is asked about in the same reply, not held back until you follow up.

Tool Steel Quote Reply Contents

The reply is a document, not an acknowledgement. Four things come back in a form you can forward downward without rewriting them.

A tool steel quote reply is written to be forwarded, not just read.

Because it is written to be forwarded, the mapping and the dates go straight back up the chain to whoever asked you.

Feasibility, line by line

A list of eight sizes commonly contains some held in stock, some produced to order, and one that needs a question asked first. You are told which is which rather than given one verdict for the whole list.

Stock position or production, per line

The five grades held in common sections — H13, D2, 1.2316, 1.2085 and 420 — are answered from the stock record. Everything else is answered from the production programme.

The grade mapping, in writing

Your designation and our grade name side by side, with the difference named where there is one. For a grade outside the fourteen you get a written comparison instead of a quiet substitution: the closest grade made here, where the two differ, and what that difference means for the tool in question.

Alongside those four, the document set that will travel with the material is listed before you order.

Nothing about the paperwork is discovered at delivery.

Who has your message

Technical Desk and Sales Desk

Your first message does not go to a salesperson. Six technical support engineers work alongside twelve export sales staff, and the technical desk reads an enquiry before anything is priced.

The intake gate — four checks before anything is priced

  • 01Grade mappingYour designation confirmed in writing against one of the fourteen grades, so you can forward it.
  • 02Section against the linesWhich forging line makes it, and whether it sits at the end of the range.
  • 03Delivery conditionAnnealed or pre-hardened — two different products, never assumed.
  • 04Downstream operationsHow much allowance the hardening, EDM work or grinding after delivery needs.
An enquiry that does not add up is stopped, not confirmed.

Where grade, section and application disagree with one another — usually a transcription slip somewhere up the chain — the desk asks rather than confirming, and asks before anything is cut.

First business can run as a single verification order before regular supply begins, so your own checks come before your commitment. That route is set out on the home page, and how the screening works is described on the about page.

Tool Steel Quote Request Form

The form carries the seven technical lines in the same order, with four commercial lines above them.

Four commercial lines sit above the technical ones: company, contact name, email address and destination country. The country is not a formality. It decides packing and marking, and whether carbon documentation has to be prepared alongside the certificate.

A submitted form arrives at the technical desk, not in a general inbox. The 24 working hour clock starts when it lands. If a line is missing, the reply still comes inside the same 24 hours and asks about the gap rather than waiting silently for it. Send what you have.

A list of twenty lines is easier to read as your own file than retyped into a box, so attach it rather than retyping it. A spreadsheet or a light PDF travels with the form; a heavy drawing file comes back on the first reply, and the form tells you which one yours is.

Document Sets Before an Order

Send your quality department’s document list before any order exists and it comes back item by item, matched to your numbering, within 24 hours on a working day.

That includes a sample EN 10204 3.1 material test certificate on the grade you are quoting, so your own quality people read a real certificate rather than a description of one.

Works Visits and Video Audits

Ask with five working days’ notice and you get a route through the works with people who can answer at each station.

Five working days

Book the Route

Notice of five working days puts a route together with the people who run each station, so questions are answered where the work happens rather than collected and posted back to you afterwards.
Third party

Bring Your Own Inspector

A third-party inspection company you nominate is received on the same terms as your own staff, with the same route and the same access at each station.
Remote

Or Run It Live

Where travel is not practical, the same route runs as a live video audit, and you can stop it at any station you name for as long as you want to look.
The arrangements are set out in full on the about page.

What is open to a visit, what a third-party representative sees, and how the live audit is run are described on the about page. Booking a date goes through this desk either way.

After delivery

Heat Number Queries After Delivery

Material already delivered comes back here too, and it comes back faster with one piece of information.

The heat number, first

The number marked on the bar and printed on the certificate, with the grade and the section. The query then lands directly with the people holding the melt, forging, heat treatment and inspection records for that heat, rather than starting as a general enquiry that has to be traced back.

What the material is doing

Say what you did not expect, and what has been measured. A hardness reading taken after your customer’s own heat treatment tells the desk more than a description of the symptom.

Photographs and results

Test results, photographs of the piece and photographs of the marking all help, and the marking photograph often settles which heat is in front of you before anything else is opened.

The marking that settles which heat is in front of you.
Material questions go to the quality department.

It holds the release authority and the archive, and the reply quotes the recorded results for that heat rather than a general statement about the grade.

The clock is worth knowing before you write. A message sent from Europe in the morning is read the same working day here. A message sent during North American business hours is answered the next working morning at this end, which usually reaches you before your own day starts.

The 24 working hour commitment is counted in working days at GMT+8, and it covers the reply itself, not an acknowledgement of receipt.
